Washington, D.C., June 2, 2023 – Today, Bread for the World released the following statement welcoming new World Bank President Ajay Banga. The statement can be attributed to Rev. Eugene Cho, president and CEO of Bread for the World:

“Bread for the World welcomes Ajay Banga in his new role as president of the World Bank. Mr. Banga begins his tenure during an unprecedented time, with multiple ongoing and overlapping global crises – including a global food crisis.

“As many as 828 million people are experiencing hunger and 349 million people are on the verge of starvation. Without immediate action by the World Bank and others, we will see a more dramatic and life-threatening rise in food insecurity and malnutrition in the coming months.

“Bread looks forward to working with Mr. Banga and his staff to make the global food crisis a top priority. This includes directing additional financing targeted for smallholder farmers, especially women, and supporting countries as they adapt to climate change and transform their food systems to be healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable.

Bread for the World is a Christian advocacy organization urging U.S. decision makers to do all they can to pursue a world without hunger
